At the GMCWS rally in King City we had a karaoke night which mostly became a sing-along. We - there were quite a few of us - had a blast. Hardly anyone could sing and we had some learning issues regarding karaoke but it was enough fun that we will do it again at the Emerald Desert rally in September.
Joanne and Phil Hernandez had borrowed a karaoke machine and a bunch of karaoke CDs from a friend. We connected the machine to our sound system and projector and were able to make it work. We did have a few problems though. We didn't know how to use the machine and we didn't know enough about karaoke to know what we were supposed to be trying to do - other than sing of course. The second problem was that we couldn't find appropriate songs for our group - songs that were old enough that is because the discs were in no particular order and each disk had a mixture of songs and styles. Another problem was that we needed a sing-along leader who could sing - Jim Rowe tried but... sorry Jim.
We have now purchased a software package that will run on a laptop, project onto our screen, have a computerized library of appropriate songs that will be easy to find, and we are acquiring karaoke CDs that have optional vocals that will lead us through the songs. Our first CD is hits by Elvis Presley and we are looking for more by Frank Sinatra, Kenny Rogers, Neil Diamond, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, The Beach Boys, the Oakridge Boys, Aretha Franklin and Ronnie Milsap.
