Discussion at April 2013 Rally"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Books for \"Women of the West\" Book Review &amp; Discussion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong> <\/strong>GMCWS Rally in Amado, Arizona - April 9 - 14, 2013<\/p>\n<p>Since our April rally will be in Arizona and our theme for the week will be the Old West, our book club meeting will be a discussion of women\u2019s lives in Arizona at the turn of the century.\u00a0 Instead of selecting a single book, I thought it would be fun to let everyone choose from among several books that all deal with women\u2019s lives in Arizona in the late 1800\u2019s\/early 1900\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a list of the books I read since I took on the task of choosing a book for the book club meeting at the upcoming rally.\u00a0 They are all available on Amazon (some on Ebay also) \u2013 new and used, or at the public library.\u00a0 Choose as many or as few as you wish\u2026and we\u2019ll talk!\u00a0 Feel free to attend the session whether or not you\u2019ve read any of the books.\u00a0 Or read another book that you discover and come share it with us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Non Fiction:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Vanishing Arizona \u2013 A Young Wife of an Officer of the U.S. 8<sup>th<\/sup> Infantry in Apacheria During the 1870\u2019s<\/span><\/strong> by Martha Summerhayes<\/p>\n<p>A true account of the life of a young army wife who followed her husband during his service in the late 1800\u2019s.\u00a0\u00a0 What a time it was!\u00a0 Though she\u2019s not a polished author, Martha\u2019s story is fascinating.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Elsie-Adventures-Arizona-Schoolteacher-1913-1916\/dp\/0983945209\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1351110275&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=elsie+arizona+schoolteacher\"><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\">Elsie - Adventures of an Arizona Schoolteacher 1913-1916<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span> by Barbara Waite<\/p>\n<p>A good read.\u00a0 Elsie Haye\u2019s diary provides an interesting look at a woman who led a very nice life back in the early 1900\u2019s.\u00a0 The diary entries are interspersed with narratives by Elsie\u2019s granddaughter, Barbara Waite.\u00a0 There were telephones but using them was a big production and traveling was a real ordeal.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Amazing Girls Of Arizona : True Stories Of Young<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pioneers<\/span> by Jan Cleere<\/p>\n<p>Jan Cleere is an attorney in Tucson and she assembled a great collection of stories.\u00a0 Fun to read because each story is only a few pages long.\u00a0 A nice, varied look at women\u2019s lives at the turn of the century.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Levi's &amp; Lace: Arizona Women Who Made History<\/span> <\/strong>by Jan Cleere<\/p>\n<p>Jan Cleere\u2019s second collection of stories.\u00a0 Interestingly written portraits of 35 heroic women of the time categorized according to their lifestyle\/profession:\u00a0 art, law, education, ranching, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fiction:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">These Is My Words<\/span><\/strong> by Nancy Turner<\/p>\n<p>A fictional story based on a historically correct depiction of the life and times of Sara Prine, \u201cone of the most memorable women ever to survive and prevail in the Arizona Territory in the late 1800\u2019s\u201d. \u00a0\u00a0A great story.\u00a0 Well written.\u00a0 The author is a Tucson resident who was inspired by her family\u2019s memoirs.<\/p>\n<p>Feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions you might have.\u00a0 We will also be having a book exchange so bring a book or two along to trade or sell if you'd like.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you, Carol Minnie<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Books for &#8220;Women of the West&#8221;
